Ericka and her 16-year-old son did not have any place to live, so they checked into a hotel and examined their options. Ericka’s grandmother had recently passed away and her grandfather decided he would no longer be able to serve as the caretaker for Ericka’s son. Ericka’s boyfriend was not too keen on the idea of having a 16-year old living with them, so both were now stuck, feeling hopeless. After looking into the costs of finding a one-bedroom, even a studio apartment, Ericka realized that too much of her income would be going to pay the rent with very little left over to cover the bills and basic living expenses. She had never lived on her own before and didn’t know what to do.

When she heard about KCR, she set up an appointment and began the task of collecting all the necessary documentation. They advised her that it could take quite a while for housing to become available, so Ericka hoped for the best even though she worried about her son and how he would deal with all of this. Fortunately, within a week, she was interviewed and selected to live in transitional housing. They stayed for about 7 months, and are now in supportive housing.

Without KCR’s assistance, she doesn’t know where she would be. She appreciates the housing counselors’ support, and she has worked really hard at reaching the goals they have set for her including improving her credit and increasing her savings. They have helped keep her on track, and her goal is to own a house in the future.
